Newton 40 Flint 5

It wasn't so much the result that counted yesterday at Newtown, but the way Flint applied themselves to the task. With a depleted squad, including new, young and the old, Flint travelled down to Newtown determined to give a good account of themselves, showing the true ethos of rugby by fulfilling the fixture.
Flint defended like demons in the 1st half, with veteran fullback Barry Goldsmith leading the way with 3 try saving tackles, his efforts inspiring the rest to raise their game. Disaster struck for Flint when fly half Kieron Jones and Goldsmith clashed heads in their efforts to defend, resulting in both being knocked out and Goldsmith receiving a nasty gash to his head. Both were taken away by separate ambulances to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, thankfully allowed home after treatment.

Despite having to shuffle their pack and only playing with 3 recognised backs, Flint battled and frustrated Newtown to 0-0 at the break. Unfortunately after the break Flints huge efforts of the 1st half began to take it's toll and Newtown started to run in a number of tries. Flint never gave up making inroads into the Newtown half, resulting in flanker Loz Rogers forcing his way over from a quick penalty.

Again, as last week, Flint had parity in the set piece and loose play, but were found wanting out wide when Newtown exposed Flints inexperience there in the 2nd half, eventually winning the game 40-5. Rob Samson and Gwyn Jones made their debuts for Flint, with man mountain Jones showing great potential at tight head prop.

Man of the match for Flint was inspirational skipper and No8 Mitch Martin, who had to move into centre after the unfortunate casualties received earlier in the game
