Flint finished the year off with a convincing win away from home against a strong Rhos side. With Flints injury count increasing evermore, Flint had to bolster their backs with a few forwards and travelled up to Rhos with some apprehension, knowing that Rhos had had some impressive home wins this season, namely against Holyhead and Llangefni who both are placed in the top half of the league table.
Flint opened up the scoring first with a penalty kick for goal by fullback James Beresford 0-3. This settled whatever nerves Flint were holding as they settled into their game plan of moving the heavier home pack around the park thus working to tire them out and create some holes in the Rhos defence to exploit, but against the run of play and with the Flint pack not quite able to drag all the home forwards in, Rhos were able to attack the Flint backs with their big ball carriers and broke their defence to score under the posts 7-3. This didn't deter Flint and were soon back on the score sheet when powerful centre Jame Elder ran in under the posts after some excellent off loading in the contact area's, converted by Beresford 7-10.
Even though Flint were only one score ahead, they had started to dominate the game and were unlucky with a number of chances to increase their lead, the best of which was when lively scrumhalf Jack Evans kicked a pin pointed box kick, chased, picked up beautifully on the bounce to leave the home defence in his wake, but unfortunately for him, his left foot encroached onto the touchline while he gathered the ball. Evans in his first season of senior rugby is already showing great signs of maturity and skill and will be one to watch out for in the future.
Flint forwards were now pilling on the pressure on their counterparts and were making them work and tire and after some pick and drives skipper Mitch Martin who had been absent for the last 3 games through a knee injury picked up where he left off and lead by example to crash over for Flints 2nd try, converted by Beresford 7-17. Before the half Beresford who is having a purple patch of his own of late, gathered the ball deep in his own half, ran round his oncoming defenders to sprint in 60 yards to score Flints 3rd try, which he duelly converted 7-24 going into the break.
The 2nd half started with the Flint pack continuing their hard work of the 1st half with all 8 forwards showing they were effective ball carriers and the pick of the pack was 2nd row Ryan Jones which ultimately gave him the man of the match acelade. Flint soon were on the scoresheet again, securing a bonus point, when Beresford with exceptional pace went in for his brace and brought his personal tally for the afternoon to 19 points, unfortunately the conversion was missed 7-29.
Rhos prooving how they had notched up their impressive home wins this season by looking to take advantage went over for an unconverted try 12-29, but that was the last time they were to get into Flints half. Flint ran in two more unconverted tries when centre Dan Stokes showed his opposite number a clean pair of heels and substute winger Sam Richmond was put in by his fellow backs to finish the score on the final whistle 12-39 TRIES James Beresford - 2 Jamie Elder - 1 Mitch Martin - 1 Dan Stokes - 1 Sam Richmond - 1 CONVERSIONS James Beresford - 3 PENALTIES James Beresford - 1 MOM Ryan Jones TOM Sam Richmond
