Flint 14 - Denbigh 5

It was sweet revenge for Flint yesterday at Cae y Castell, overturning the loss of the first game of the season away against Denbigh with a dogged home win 14-5. With conditions not suited for Flint's normal expansive game, they had to change style and take on the bigger Denbigh pack, adopting a shorter passing game due to the strong winds.

The first-half saw Flint playing against the strong wind, having to drive the ball out of their own half. Any loose ball was punished by the Denbigh No 10 who used the elements to good effect by kicking the ball back down deep into Flints own 22. Flint worked hard to keep a determined Denbigh side at bay, with some tremendous defensive performances notably by fly half Tom Prydderch, scrum half Geraint Jones & skipper Mitch Martin. Flints determined attitude forced a frustrated Denbigh into making mistakes. Hooker Owain Roberts was influential in turning over ball whilst prop Dai Goss belied his years with his work rate in and around the tackle area. Flint battled hard against the elements and managed to force themselves into Denbigh's half, eventually getting into striking range of the Denbigh line.  Flanker Josh Moss, standing in for Loz Rogers while on his Caribbean winter break, drove over to score his 2nd try in two games and stand-off Prydderch kicked the conversion to make the score 7-0. Denbigh seemed more determined than ever to get something out of the half before the change around and were rewarded with an unconverted try to make the half time score 7-5.

The second half saw the introduction of fresh wingers for the injured Ryan Jones and young Sam Lewsey, who's showing great potential the more 1st team games he plays. Both wingers got themselves involved quickly into the game in both attack and  defence. With the elements in this half, Flint were able to put pressure on their opponents, but Denbigh fought back and kept themselves in the game. The second half was a bit of a stale mate until the introduction of Damian Goss at fullback for the ever busy Ryan Beck. Goss with his long kicks managed to put more pressure on Denbigh. With the appearance of veteran of veterans Aled Davies Flint now were spending more time in Denbigh's half. From a driving maul, centre Matt Harvey went in under the posts for Flints second try, converted by Prydderch to make the final score 14-5.

The game finished with a double sin binning of the Denbigh scrum half and Flint loose head prop Jake Shill for a heated debate on who was the better looking player. With no clear winner on this, the referee decided give them 10 minutes to reflect on their actions.

Man of the match was Mitch Martin as voted by the 'Old Boys'.

Report by Aled Davies.
