Flint 31 Holyhead 45

With Flint’s injury list ever increasing, picking up 2 more last week away at Rhos, they are having to show their resourcefulness & versatility, let alone metal to put out a competitive side to consolidate their league position. Against Holyhead they did this masterfully, although the result didn't reflect their efforts.

Holyhead respecting their task and opposition travelled with a strong side and drew a first blood by scoring a well worked try, converted, 0-7. Flint soon hit back with a converted try of their own, when fullback James Beresford showed his pace to score under the posts 7-7. Flint with the bit between their teeth were not for letting islanders off the hook and hit back again when 2nd row Josh Moss went in for the first of his brace of tries converted by Beresford 14-7. With the quality of side Holyhead brought down, they were always going to be in the game and went in for a converted try of their own 14-14.
This was turning out to be a true contest of rugby by two sides wanting to show their quality and for the impartial spectator they were surely getting their money's worth (if only Flint charged an entrance fee); this maybe something to be considered with the quality of rugby that's been on show at Cae-y-Castell this season.

Before the break, Holyhead went over again for an unconverted try 14-19, then Flint pressed hard again and when winger Ryan Hayward, who normally plies his trade at 2nd row, was fed the ball out wide, he bulldozed his way through the last of Holyhead's defence to score, converted by Beresford 21-19.
At the start of the 2nd half it was Flint who drew first blood with a penalty, converted by Beresford 24-19. Flint were now back in the lead and under normal conditions would have pulled away as they have always been the fitter side, however, this wasn't normal conditions, not only where they having to content with the reshuffle of players and players playing out of position, they were up against a very determined Holyhead side, playing great rugby themselves with equal fitness.

At this stage of the game Holyhead found another gear and ran in 2 consecutive tries, both of which converted to take back the lead and earn themselves a 4 try bonus point in the process  24-33. Flint, still not out of the game, came back strongly when 2nd row Moss went over for his brace and earned himself man of the match award. His try also gave Flint a 4 try bonus point, converted by  Beresford 31-33, also bringing Beresford's personal tally for the game to 16 points.

Unfortunately Flint were not able to press again to bring home the win and let in Holyhead for 2 more scores one converted 31-45, in doing so missing out on a losing bonus point, which at least they deserved for their efforts. Final score 31-45. Although the result was disappointing, one major factor wasn't and that was the spirit, determination and comradeship shown by every player who put on the yellow 50th anniversary shirt, including the 2 substities who didn't manage to get on, namely Jack Douglas and Ross Mitchell. With unnecessary disruption immediately  prior to the game, the result could have been a different one for Flint. The players responsible for this show immaturity, lack of respect for their fellow players, shirt, club and themselves and need take a long hard look at themselves, grow up and start being honest to prove they want to be part of a great team and club.
